Our downtowns are changing. In 2023 and 2024, the Downtown Sydney Committee came together to talk about these changes and how we can work together to create a downtown that is safe, inclusive, prosperous + welcoming for all.
The Downtown Sydney Committee was comprised of representatives of the CBRM (elected officials and staff), Nova Scotia Department of Community Services, Cape Breton Regional Police, downtown non-profit organizations, and businesses. The Committee met three times and met with the Minister of, and staf from, the Nova Scotia Office of Mental Health and Addictions.
This website shares the findings and progress of the Committee. It includes an outline of the strategy created by Committee, some FAQs about the ways in which the downtown is changing, resources available in the downtown, and a place to provide input on the strategy. The Committee has paused its work for the duration of the municipal election and plans to reconvene once a new Mayor and Council are elected.
